Lesson: Dinosaurs were burned after the Chicxulub impact



About 66 million years ago, an asteroid impact wiped out three-thirds of all species of plants and animals on Earth, mostly wiping out the dinosaurs. But exactly how the destruction led to those deserts has been the subject of great debate. According to a new paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, the results would have produced a huge cloud of dust that heated up the atmosphere, flammable organisms that could not hide and ignited wildfires.

Like it has already been saidand the most acceptable explanation because of what caused the disaster the great end known as “Alvarez hypothesis,” after the deaths of geologist Luis Alvarez and his geologist son, Walter. A large asteroid or comet hit the World. They based this on their analysis of sedimentary layers on Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary(the K-Pg boundary, formerly known as the KT boundary) is found all over the world, which includes many measurements of iridium—a metal that is more abundant in asteroids than on Earth. (The same year, the Dutch geophysicist Jan Smit arrived independently common sense.)

Since then, scientists have discovered areas that can affect: a large valley in Chicxulub, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula, where it was first discovered by geologists in the late 1970s. The force it produced was large enough (between 11 and 81 kilometers, or 7 to 50 miles) to melt, vibrate, and release precious stones deep inside the Earth, possibly causing a megatsunami and releasing rock and dry sulfate into the atmosphere. It is estimated that this force would have produced more than one billion times more energy than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
