Now to the fun part. What’s next for LeBron?
At 41 years old, it would be surprising if this summer’s switch isn’t the end of a career that began in 2003 with the Cavaliers.
With career earnings from basketball alone thought to be north of half a billion dollars, money may not be the motive for his next move.
A player of James’ caliber, even at his age, is rarely available in what would likely be an affordable deal, but the veteran, given his timeline, will certainly want to go to a contending team to try to add to his four NBA titles.
As with the Cavs, another of James’ former teams in the Miami Heat has also been suggested as a potential home.
Florida is off to a strong start alongside fellow new signing and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and center Bam Adebayo.
Given that Milwaukee traded key members of their squad to land Antetokounmpo, a player of James’ caliber would add more scoring ability and experience to a Miami team focused on a quick rebuild toward a title push.
Cleveland is on an upward trajectory with four straight trips to the playoffs, but lacks the ability to make a postseason run.
A move back to his home state of Ohio, if he can play forward, James Harden and Donovan Mitchell will make for a strong starting lineup that won’t lack for talent or experience.
The Golden State Warriors are another team reportedly considering a move.
Two summers later, James and Steph Curry watched each other play when the United States won Olympic gold in Paris. They also need an injection of quality after their worst season since last term in 2019-20.
Also linked are the Minnesota Timberwolves. They already have one of the league’s newest stars, Anthony Edwards, who James also played with in the last Olympics.
They reached the Western Conference Final Four in three consecutive seasons, but never reached the NBA Finals.
On and off the court, James remains a box office figure. The coming weeks and months of discussion about his future will be heated enough, when he sports new colors this fall.
