James’ move comes after he said he was ‘done’ after his 23rd NBA season and his last with the Los Angeles Lakers.

LeBron James is going to the Philadelphia 76ers.

James made the announcement Friday on social media, saying it was his “final decision” and that it came after he had given much thought to retirement.

“I hope I can help the Philadelphia 76ers become a great team and I’m excited to inspire new fans and start this incredible journey one last time,” James said.

James wrote that he was “spent” when his 23rd NBA season ended and that it was his last with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I was sure that I played my last game. I was honest in the last press conference when I said that I have to look at myself and decide if I still love the game,” James wrote. “I still love the game, and I have a lot to give.”

The 41-year-old James is close to signing an $8m, two-year contract with the Sixers, according to ESPN. He made about $53m last season.

James wrote: “I don’t need money. “What am I playing at the moment? I still want to volunteer. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have the opportunity to feel that I have won.”

James joins a 76ers team that hasn’t won an NBA championship since 1983 and hasn’t made it past the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs since 2001. He joins a team that should boast one of the top five starters in the NBA with fellow All-Stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, acquired in a surprise deal with the Celtics.
