Glasgow, United Kingdom – Voters in England council elections He has delivered a disastrous Labor decision as he took hundreds of seats from the UK’s ruling party, in what looks to be another major setback for Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Although most of the results of Thursday’s general election in England have not been announced, the Reform UK party has won a majority. he made a huge profit for Labour, which has so far lost almost 300 councilors in the 136 councils in England it is competing against.
More than 5,000 English council seats were up for grabs in the contest, which Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said he sees as “work…Reform UK has won more than 500 seats and four councils as it looks set to pose a serious challenge to Labor in the UK’s general election due to take place in 2029.”
“Revolution will clearly celebrate the results of their campaign, but they should focus on the more difficult business of governing,” James Mitchell, a professor at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science, told Al Jazeera.
“Gaining a base in local governments can be an important base from which we can overcome difficulties in the next election, but it comes with challenges… Much will depend on how Reform works in local governments.”
The Labor Party, which appears to be shifting to the right under Starmer, despite previously being on the left of politics, has faced political challenges since beating the incumbent Conservatives in the 2024 UK general election.
Indeed, from dealing with internal crises to his administration after several Labor coups to the political collapse of the Prime Minister’s crisis. a choice decision Peter Mandelson as the British ambassador in Washington, Starmer cut the risk of most of his leadership.
This latest backlash will only sharpen the knives of those in the Labor Party who want to see Starmer out, says Mitchell, especially when hundreds of MPs are at risk of losing their jobs at the next election.
“Keir Starmer’s administration was destroyed before this election … and there must come a time when the likes of Labor MPs oppose (his ministry) to get it done,” he said. “The recovery is slow for the Prime Minister when he loses and backs down.”

As Reform UK emerges as the winner of the English election, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party are also making inroads.
The Greens, which has enjoyed popularity since its Jewish origins, is a member of the Palestinian London Assembly. Zack Polanski elected leader in 2025, he has achieved a little more than expected, but he is still using this as a way to get countries.
“Green politics is basically, people’s politics,” Nick Hartley, Green Party councilor in Newcastle, told Al Jazeera. “What we’ve seen in the last two years in Newcastle is the power of people coming together to challenge injustice and to take local action. Reform UK, backed by billions and speaking from big platforms, is in charge. They don’t have our communities at heart.”
Indeed, Green Party voters in England remain concerned about the rise of Reform UK and their anti-immigration platform. Just days before the general election, Reform caused a political storm when it promised to set up refugee camps in Greens-controlled areas if it won the UK general election.
“Their whole schtick is designed to be confusing and divisive,” Laura Hind, Greens supporter in Yorkshire, told Al Jazeera. “What he stands for doesn’t align with anything I believe in, and I think that, even though he’s hot, he doesn’t have any … real facts.”
However, as Starmer faces a battle to remain party leader, Reform UK has found earthquakes in England – which, as the largest of the UK’s four countries, make up more than 80 per cent of the country’s population – have put the party front and center in a volatile country.
“The results look like the message we’ve been getting for months is now coming through,” Tim Bale, a professor of politics at Queen Mary University in London, told Al Jazeera.
“Reform is currently the leader of the party in a growing number of parties and, more importantly, the top dog on the right of British politics, having taken seats from the Conservatives, as well as Labour.”
