Lando Norris at the British Grand Prix, Paying the Price for 2025 Glory, George Russell, Max Verstappen and Living for Life at McLaren

As for his own performance this year, Norris said, “I’m very happy.” He is one point behind Piastri in the championship, but has since secured three retirements for the Australian duo.

In qualifying, the fight is as close as ever, but Norris currently leads 7-4, and is just 0.022 seconds ahead.

“My performance this year was better on average than last season,” he says. “I still find it a very complicated car to drive and I find it difficult to understand the session. Like every single track, corner, what it takes to set up, what it takes to get everything out of this car.

“So, we’re still struggling as a pair of drivers to fully understand that. But I feel like I’ve had a better start to the year than last year.”

“Last year that meant, you know, maybe winning, like leading or not leading the championship. This year it means being within 80 to 100 points, you know?

Interestingly, there are parallels between Norris’s season last year and Britain’s George Russell battling team-mate Antonelli for his own title.

Like Norris, Russell won the Australian Open. Like Norris, Russell then got into a tough situation where his teammate took the lead.

The pair get along well – as do most drivers of the same generation – but Norris says they haven’t discussed the possibility.

“George and I are very different personalities,” says Norris. “Yeah, he’s usually sneaky about things. I think I’m just open to things.

“Kimmy’s doing a great job. And you have to give your teammate a ‘hat’ for a job well done.”

“When Oscar beat me last year, he did an amazing job. I was like, ‘I’ve done a bad job, he’s doing a good job.’ I’m not afraid to say when someone’s doing a good job.”

“Kimi has been doing an unbelievable job this season. You know, at 19, in his second year in Formula 1, what he’s doing is amazing. He’s also a factor in Formula 1, so I don’t think it’s surprising.

“Obviously he’s had some ups and downs against George and George – he’s definitely had more problems and problems and failures than Kimi. Sometimes it’s hard to overcome them, especially when you feel like it could be a win or a win or a win or whatever.

“But he’s a smart guy. I think he understands what’s needed from his own side. And so, I’m sure he can come back when he needs to.”
