La Liga suddenly explodes… a historic decision that changes the face of refereeing forever

A huge revolution

The Spanish league is preparing for an unprecedented, revolutionary move that could change the face of refereeing in football, following a bold decision announced by La Liga president Javier Tebas to put technology at the heart of the refereeing process from next season.

artificial intelligence

In statements to Spanish media, Tebas unveiled an advanced artificial intelligence-based system that will bring about a qualitative change in the way referees are selected and evaluated, in an effort to put an end to recurring disputes over controversial refereeing decisions.

The new system will work on two strategic axes. the first is to evaluate referees’ performance after each match, where intelligent algorithms will analyze refereeing decisions based on objective criteria and accurate data, away from personal evaluations and human impressions that can be marred by subjectivity.

Smart nominations for referee selection

The second axis concerns the process of selecting referees for the matches itself, as the intelligent system will nominate 3 referees for each match based on their previous records, accurate statistics and their technical suitability to the nature of the game, until the relevant committee makes the final selection.

The human element remains the master of the decision

Tebas wanted to reassure followers that AI will not eliminate the role of human judgement, but will be a support tool that increases the accuracy of decisions and reduces the margin of error, stressing that the human element will remain the cornerstone of the arbitration system.

Towards a new era of transparency

The move stems from a comprehensive vision adopted by Spanish football to apply modern technology to the management of the tournament, especially given the growing criticism of refereeing decisions and ongoing demands for greater transparency and fairness in competitions.

With this decision, the Spanish league places itself at the forefront of European leagues seeking to adapt artificial intelligence to serve the world’s most popular game.
