La Liga: Girona relegation two years after finishing third, Mallorca also down

Girona were relegated from La Liga after just one season of playing in the Champions League.

The Catalans, who finished third two seasons ago, needed to win to stay up but drew 1-1 in Elche.

Mallorca also recorded a 3-0 win over bottom side Real Oviedo, but they finished level with Osasuna and Levante on 42 points.

However, Mallorca were relegated to the second tier after losing the head-to-head tiebreaker between the three clubs.

Champions Barcelona were beaten 3-1 by Valencia but it wasn’t enough for Carlos Corberan to sneak into the European places.

Sixth place and a Europa League spot went to Celta Vigo after their 1-0 win over Sevilla, while Getafe’s 1-0 win over Osasuna helped them finish seventh and claim Conference League qualification.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe were both on target as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Dani Carvajal’s 451st and final appearance for the club.
