The relationship between Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola is one of the most prominent factors behind the club’s desire to sign the Spanish coach in the next round.
In 2023, Hughes, who was then Bournemouth’s manager, was instrumental in bringing Iraola to the English club, so the Spanish coach began his first forays into English football.
Just three years later, Iraola vindicated the bet on him when he announced his departure from Bournemouth at the end of the season last April, leaving the team in their best form of 18 consecutive games without defeat, which saw them finish sixth and qualify for European competition for the first time.
The 43-year-old coach’s career has seen various stops, starting with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus, going through Spanish side Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano before moving to Bournemouth and making his name in the English Premier League.
Although his coaching record does not include many titles, with the 2018 Cyprus Super Cup remaining his only achievement so far, his success has always been about exceeding expectations and achieving results beyond the reach, which was clearly epitomized by his best-ever run at Bournemouth during his three consecutive seasons.
Both Hughes and Michael Edwards, chief executive of Fenway Sports Group, which owns Liverpool, believe Iraola has what it takes to rebuild the Reds and regain their place among Europe’s elite clubs.
