Katie Boulter failed to make a promising start as she lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to American Ashlyn Kruger in the first round of the Mubadala DC Open.
In Mexico, fellow Brit Cameron Norrie advanced to the second round of the Telcel Oppo Mifel Tennis Open with a 6-4 6-1 win over world number 95 Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Boulter dominated the first set and broke in the seventh game when Kruger sent a backhand long.

The Brit, making his first appearance since exiting Wimbledon in the first round, broke again two games later to win the opening set.
After committing 16 unforced errors in the first set, Kruger turned things around, breaking Boulter twice in the second set to level the contest.
The final set was a tense affair, with Kruger immediately on the offensive, forcing Boulter to save two break points, but the Brit held serve.
Boulter then hit back to take a 2-0 lead, but could not sustain his momentum, with Kruger breaking his opponent three times in the next five games to seal the victory.
Kruger will now face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round.
Norrie ends ATP Tour losing streak
Cameron Norrie ended a six-match losing streak on the ATP Tour in Mexico on Monday.

Despite winning in straight sets, it was not all plain sailing for the Briton, who lost on serve in the opening game.
He immediately hit back, leveling the set, but once again struggled to hold serve, with Norrie saving two break points to prevent his opponent from advancing.
The first set came down to the wire with Kovacevic and Norrie trading breaks in the eighth and ninth games, but it was the Brit who came out on top.
Norrie kicked into second gear in the second set, leading 4-1 before seeing the match out in just over half an hour to book a second-round tie against Aidan Mayo or Jamie Duckworth.
