Karen Carter: Police routinely investigate woman after Brit stabbed to death in French village.

A woman faces a formal inquest into the death of a British-South African mother of four last year.

Karen Carter, 65, was found lying next to her car with stab wounds by her friend in the village of Trémolat, Dordogne, where she has lived for more than a decade and runs two holiday rentals.

Prosecutors said the 70-year-old woman was subject to a preliminary investigation in 2025 before she was released from prison.

Jacques-Edouard Andralt, the investigating judge in the case, said in a statement on Wednesday: “The investigation conducted as part of the judicial inquiry opened on May 7, 2025 led to the official indictment of the investigating judge.”

Allen, Karen Carter’s husband at the time of the murder in April last year, said he first heard of her death through a cousin who read about it on a local community Facebook page.

The aide said he called the local police and got confirmation of his death.

Describing his wife as a friendly, outgoing person who “wouldn’t hurt a fly”, he said her death was “traumatic” for the family.

“I’m an introvert, and she’s the complete opposite. She’s an extrovert, she likes people, she likes to have fun. People like her, she has a good heart,” he said.

“She’s the one who brings home the lost dog or cat or whatever. She’s that kind of person. Everyone likes her. That’s why I married her. She’s beautiful.”
