Josh Kerr says breaking the men’s mile world record is “a great achievement” but hints he may try to set a new mark.
Kerr, 28, beat Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouz’s 1999 time, crossing the line in three minutes 42.66 seconds.
The Scot is the seventh British athlete to claim the mile record and the first since Steve Cram in 1985.
“My biggest goal (this year) was after the world record in the mile,” Kerr told BBC Breakfast. “It was a perfect year for it.
“The UK mile is steeped in history, obviously Sir Roger Bannister broke four minutes in the mile in 1954 and then we’ve had an incredible number of British athletes for a long time – (Sebastian) Coe, Cram, (Steve) Ovett – it was the right time for me and the UK to bring the distance back home.
“To be able to break that record by almost half a second was a great achievement.
“On another day, maybe with a little more favorable wind, I might have taken another small part of it. It’s with us now and if we’re in fitness for it again, we might go after it and take another good part of it.”
