It was announced on Tuesday evening that Arbeloa will leave the club, replacing Xabi Alonso in January.

A club statement said: “Real Madrid CF and Alvaro Arbeloa have reached an agreement to end his tenure as first team coach.

“Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Alvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his career at the club, from the time he joined our academy, has always shown loyalty, commitment and professionalism. His personality is a true example of our club’s values.

Gary Cotterill brings the latest from Madrid, where Florentino Perez is set to be re-elected as president – and re-appointed Jose Mourinho as manager.

“We won the election and will continue to work to win the title,” Perez said. “I’m still here and I’m here to defend Real Madrid.

“We will continue to work so that Real Madrid can win the title, and we will fight to the end to achieve the 16th European Cup.

“We will continue to be proud of the best stadium in the world, the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

“We are proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome one of the best coaches in the world, a madridista like Jose Mourinho. And rest assured, as president, Real Madrid was, is and always will be owned by its members.”
