Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid: Spanish giants confirm former Chelsea and Man Utd boss’ return to Bernabeu | football news

Real Madrid have confirmed the re-appointment of Jose Mourinho as first team coach.

It was a dramatic return to the Bernabeu for Mourinho, 13 years after his first spell in charge at Real Madrid. During that initial spell in charge, Mourinho spent three years at Madrid, winning La Liga with a record points total, as well as the Copa del Rey and Supercopa.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, who led Benfica to an unbeaten league campaign last season, has signed a three-year contract with Real, which runs until June 30, 2029.

He will officially join the club on July 13 for the start of pre-season.

Benfica previously said Real Madrid would pay them £12.9m (€15m) in compensation for Mourinho.

The departure of Alvaro Arbeloa on Tuesday cleared the way for Mourinho to be named as Real Madrid’s new manager.

Benfica confirmed Mourinho’s departure and the appointment of former Fulham boss Marco Silva hours later.

A Real Madrid statement on Thursday evening read: “Today, Thursday, June 11, and chaired by Florentino Perez, the board of directors of Real Madrid CF has agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as first team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.”

Mourinho had hoped to start after Madrid’s last La Liga game against Athletic Bilbao two weeks ago but a presidential election took place, which ended with Perez’s victory on Sunday. Then all was cleared for Mourinho’s return

Mourinho will take five coaches with him to Real: his assistant coaches Joao Tralhao and Pedro Machado, his physical conditioning coach Antonio Dias, analyst Roberto Marella and goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos.

Sky Sports’ Peter Smith:

Jose Mourinho has been re-appointed by Real Madrid. It’s a dream return for the head coach – but when he gets down to business he will find a number of dilemmas he needs to resolve if he is to make a success of his second spell at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid finished a distant second to Barcelona in La Liga last season, suffering the infamy of sealing their rivals’ crown with a Clásico victory at the Spotify Camp Nou. Bayern Munich had too much firepower in the Champions League.

Real did not win any big trophy in the last two seasons. Here are the issues Mourinho needs to address to keep the Spanish giants at the top.

‘A true Madridista’ – Perez’s promise to Mourinho after re-election

Mourinho’s return to the Spanish capital was delayed by the recent presidential election at the club.

Florentino Perez overcame competition from Enrique Riquelme and immediately confirmed that Mourinho would return to the Bernabeu.

Jamie Carragher gives his verdict on news that Jose Mourinho is set to return to Real Madrid

“We won the election and will continue to work to win the title,” Perez said. “I’m still here and I’m here to defend Real Madrid.

“We will continue to work so that Real Madrid can win the title, and we will fight to the end to achieve the 16th European Cup.

“We will continue to be proud of the best stadium in the world, the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

“We are proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome one of the best coaches in the world, a madridista like Jose Mourinho. And rest assured, as president, Real Madrid was, is and always will be owned by its members.”
