John Stones fined shoulder after prank with England boss Thomas Tuchel

A glimpse inside the Three Lions’ changing room shows manager Thomas Tuchel clapping along to the post-match tune, before anxiously halting his celebrations as Declan Rice flags that defender John Stones has hurt his shoulder.

Or so the boss thinks.

But Stones, who was holding his shoulders and flexing his arms in apparent discomfort, then began pumping his fists towards the ceiling as he dropped the kick – to cheers from his teammates and Tuchel’s obvious relief.

A bouncing Tuchel then pogos the 32-year-old to hug him and a viral moment is born, racking up more than 40 million views on social media.

“It feels good now, it feels good – it has its ups and downs,” Stones said during an interview with England’s domestic media when asked about his shoulder.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a shock injury after the match when he fell while jumping on an advertising hoarding.

Stones added: “I tried to keep a straight face while doing it because I could see he (Tuchel) was worried and thinking, ‘Did he really hurt himself?’.

“Especially after what Hendo did outside, he didn’t know what was coming but there was a good vibe.

“I didn’t think it would get this much traction to be fair.”

Stones, who started England’s 4-2 win over Croatia and made a last-minute appearance in the 2-1 win over DR Congo, came on just half an hour into the game against Mexico when winger Bukayo Saka sacrificed himself after Jarel Kwansah’s red card.

England’s opponent in the quarter-finals is Norway Saturday in Miami (22:00 BST).
