Jill Biden worried husband Joe had a stroke during the 2024 US debate | Government Affairs

Former US first lady Jill Biden saw her husband’s poor performance in the first presidential debate of 2024, a moment that marked the beginning of the end of his re-election campaign.

In an online preview of the interview Wednesday, the CBS Sunday Morning television program pressed the first lady to respond on the spot.

“Did you get scared when you saw what was going on?” host Rita Braver asked Jill Biden.

“I was not afraid,” he replied. “I was scared, because I’ve never seen Joe like that before or since.”

Braver then asked Jill Biden what she thought happened on June 27, 2024, when her husband, then-incumbent Joe Biden, took the debate against fellow Republican Donald Trump.

“I don’t know what happened,” Jill Biden said. “When I saw it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke,’ and it scared me to death.”

Biden’s change

Both Joe and Jill Biden have not been seen since the 2024 election, which resulted in Trump being re-elected for a second, if not consecutive, term as President.

Critics also said the incident was fueling Joe Biden’s campaign for a second term and fueling rumors of his declining health.

The incumbent Democrat was 81 at the time. A year later, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Although Mr. Biden has faced Trump twice in the past, in the 2020 presidential election, his appearance in 2024 has been seriously threatened.

While on stage, Mr. Biden appeared to be walking stiffly and struggling to keep his thoughts. At one point, he left, simply declaring, “We beat Medicare.”

The televised debate sparked discussions about the aging of both candidates, and whether Biden was fit to continue leading. Members of Biden’s party asked him to suspend his re-election campaign, which he did on July 21, 2024, less than four months before the vote.

His running mate at the time, Kamala Harris, won the Democratic nomination, but her short campaign ended in Trump’s loss.

Since then, Trump has tried to portray Biden as not managing his administration. In part, this has been the rationale for Trump’s efforts to reverse his past actions.

For example, Trump said that executive orders and mercy votes that Biden proposed were invalid because the Democrat or his staff used an autopen, a signature device that Trump himself used while on the job.

Trump also ordered the Justice Department to investigate whether federal officials tried to cover up anything Biden did while in office, including the use of an autopen.

The New York Times reported in March that the Justice Department lacked evidence to bring charges against Biden and his aides.

And Mr. Biden himself has abandoned the accusations that he was a minority when he was in office.

“Let me be clear: I made decisions in my presidency,” Biden said in a speech last year. “I made decisions about pardons, laws, regulations, and information.

Mr. Biden opposes the Justice Department

Trump and his Republican allies have continued to probe Biden’s health and his intentions as president.

Their efforts were fueled by the special counsel’s report by Robert Hur, who was tasked with conducting an independent investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents.

Hur denied being charged, but explained that his decision was motivated, in part, by Biden’s age.

The report described Biden’s memory as “extremely limited”, and Hur questioned whether a judge would believe Biden kept any notes “intentionally”.

“At the time of his trial or sentencing, Mr. Biden would be in his eighties, an age at which very few people are tried,” Hur said, adding: “For the most part, his record of service also supports the decision to recuse himself.”

To flesh out some of his ideas, Hur cited Biden’s audio and writings and authored his heart-wrenching memoir, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Challenge, and Purpose.

The posts came mostly from 2016 and 2017, before Biden was elected president in 2020. He was out of office at the time.

But Trump allies have sought to release the documents to the public, citing them as evidence that Biden was unfit to serve in office before the 2021 inauguration.

The Heritage Foundation, a right-leaning think tank, is among the groups calling for registration.

Tuesday, Biden the defendant The Department of Justice to block the release of the files, citing his right to privacy. The lawsuit alleges that Biden told psychic writer Mark Zwonitzer details about his life, including the death of his son, Beau.

“When the United States Department of Justice obtains confidential information through a criminal investigation, the Department has a duty to protect it from disclosure,” the lawsuit states.

Trump responded to Biden’s accusation this week calling The Democrat is a “crooked politician” in a social media post.

The Republican leader has also faced questions about his mental health. If he lasts longer, Trump will be 82 years old at the end of his presidency, a few months older than Biden was when he left.
