Jiju Bergs wins first ATP Tour title after defeating Ugo Humbert in Eastbourne

Belgium’s Jijou Bergs claimed his first ATP Tour title after coming from a set down to beat French sixth seed Hugo Humbert in the Eastbourne Open final.

Rain halted Saturday’s action after just three games, meaning the pair had to restart on Sunday, and it was world number 48 Bergs who came through 3-6 6-1 6-4 in tough, blistering conditions.

The two players will meet again in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Humbert, ranked 30th in the world and chasing his eighth tour title, looked the tighter early on, easily wrapping up the first set.

But Bergs started the second set with real intent and cruised into the match, helping the double break set up a decider.

She earned the first break point of the third set in the fifth game, and although Humbert saved them, she was pressed again in her next service game and a forehand gave Miss Bergs the advantage.

The Belgian, who had lost his two previous finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Auckland, showed few signs of nerves afterwards and when Humbert netted the championship point, he jumped for joy and let out a roar of relief.
