Janic Ciner: Madrid Open win over Alexander Zverev sets Masters title record

Janic Ciner became the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1,000 titles after defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets to win the Madrid Open.

The Italian first seed completed his record-breaking feat against the world number three in a stunning 6-1 6-2 win in 58 minutes.

Sinner, 24, won the first three ATP 1,000 events of the season in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo and also won in Paris five months ago.

“I think there’s a lot of work behind it. I put in a lot of dedication and sacrifice every day. Obviously, it means a lot to me to see these results,” said Ciner, who has now beaten Zverev in nine straight meetings.

“At some point, the results are going to be low, which is normal. I’m very happy that I believed in myself. I’m showing up every day, every practice session, trying to do the right thing with the right discipline.”

Sinner surpassed Novak Djokovic, who won four consecutive events three times, and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who won four consecutive tournaments in 2013.

Djokovic lifted five trophies in a row, between Indian Wells and the Canadian Open in 2011, and on two occasions from the 2014 Paris Masters to the 2015 Rome Masters, but did not play in Monte Carlo and Madrid, respectively, during those runs.

The 38-year-old Serb is the only player to win nine career ‘golden masters’ Masters titles – matched by Papi if he wins in Rome next week.
