“No one knows this, but after Real Madrid I was going to go to Manchester United. Then (players’ agent) Jorge Mendes told me. “Do you want to go to Bayern Munich?” So I told him. “Where will I get a chance to play?” “There’s Ribery and Robben…” He told me. “Carlo is the one asking you.”

“Then Carlo Ancelotti called me and I told him: “I think I’m going to Manchester.” Carlo replied. “Manchester. United is over, my friend. You have to come here (in Bavaria) with me.”

James talked about his feelings about leaving Real Madrid, saying: “I came home, I was sad and I went to cry alone so my daughter wouldn’t see me. But he found me and asked me why I was crying. I told him we had to leave and that we had to change clubs. My heart was completely broken.”
