Jaka sent a sharp message. If we were 11 against 11, the story would have changed against Argentina.

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka confirmed that Brill Embolo’s red card was a turning point in the match against Argentina, which ended with Switzerland losing 1-3 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

The game saw a thrilling moment in the 69th minute when the referee initially booked Argentina’s Leandro Paredes for a challenge on Embolo, before the video technology intervened and asked for a review of the tackle.

After returning to the screen, the referee overturned the caution for Paredes and decided to issue a yellow card to Embolo for the action, making it the Swiss striker’s second after receiving his first caution in the first half. He was sent off in the 72nd minute while the score was tied at 1-1.

“I think the red card completely changed the course of our game and changed the game plan we had from the start, which was very positive.”

“It’s very unfortunate to lose because of one referee’s decision, but in the end it was his decision.”

The captain of Switzerland continued. “It’s hard to take it now after the game because the dressing room was completely silent and I’m disappointed.”

“But to feel disappointed against a team like Argentina, it shows the great mentality this team has.”

He continued his speech by saying: “Rules are rules and we can’t change them, but in my personal opinion this is a decision that kills the fun of the game.”

“I don’t know what the player could have done differently, but just don’t kill the fun of playing.”

“I think we were playing really well and like I said if it was 11-11 we could have kept up with them, but after this loss it’s really hard to find the right words.”

With the win, Argentina qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup, while Switzerland crashed out of the tournament after a match that witnessed plenty of excitement and refereeing controversies.
