New world champion Jack Catterall says he feels “better than ever” and will “put on a great fight” if he doesn’t face Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero for the vacant WBA welterweight title.
Catterall produced the performance of his career to claim the vacant WBA ‘regular’ welterweight title in Egypt last month, defeating Shakharam Giyasov by unanimous decision.
Romero is the WBA’s designated ‘Super World Champion’ and was given a maximum 180 days from May 23 to face Catterall (33-2), despite being inactive since defeating Ryan Garcia in New York in May 2025.
Reports have linked Romero (17-2) with a summer comeback and a possible voluntary fight ahead of an ordered clash with Catterall, who was frustrated by the delay but is open to other options.
“The news now is that he’s going to have a fight, an interim fight or a busy fight in August, which is not ideal,” Catterall said. Sky Sports.
“There’s a chance (for him) to get cut, but I’m going to fight for that ‘super’ title anyway. If not, I’m in a great division with a lot of big name fighters, a lot of titles.
“Nobody’s come together yet so there’s a chance to do that. There’s got to be some great fights.”
Who else could he possibly face instead, Catterall added: “I like the winner of (Lewis) Crocker v Liam Paro. Conor Benn, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, Roly Romero – I’ll fight them all whenever.
“I’ve got my piece of the puzzle now and hopefully that brings some weight to the table, but I’m confident in taking these fights and winning all these fights.”

Catterall has seen his career accelerate since his controversial loss to Josh Taylor in 2022, winning seven of his next eight fights – including a rematch against Taylor and last month’s victory over Giyasov – to regain the world title.
“I like being the underdog,” admitted Catterall. “I saw many predictions and we knew how well Shakharam (Giyasov) was there, the Olympic medalist, the undefeated professional but I don’t think there was anyone who could convince me that it wasn’t going to be my night.
“I never really get emotional but the emotions showed after the fight. It was a bit of a journey and I enjoyed every moment of it. It was disappointing to get a rematch after the first (Josh) Taylor fight and not have a title on the line.
“I’ve been focused, I’ve been disciplined, I’ve stayed in the gym and I’ve put myself back in a position to fight for the title – it’s been a bit of a journey.
“I stay in the gym and that would be my message to young fighters – you have to take care of yourself. I feel better than I’ve ever felt at 32. I’m excited for the next few years, what opportunities we can have and hopefully collect some more belts.”
