Europe wasted no time in using its famous Digital Markets Act (DMA) to try to revive Big Tech. Companies like Apple, Meta, and Google have met higher fees and ordered that change their business practices finding the law it started working in 2024. And the buzz continues for Big Tech in Europe. After several months of deliberation, the European Commission has decided announced new DMA methods which will force Google to help coordinate and compete in the European Union, and Google is not happy about it.
The new “clarification” covers two areas of Google’s business: Android phones and search. All of these changes could increase competition and give users more options, but Google says it will compromise privacy and security. But as a “guardian” under the DMA, Google has no choice but to comply. As the European Commission explains in its announcement, these decisions are legally binding.
On Android, Google should open access to competing AI platforms. Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini gets access to the system. Gemini is downloaded on all Android phones approved by Google and can wake up in response to the hot voice “Hey Google”. Google’s AI includes automated systems and programs, image recognition, and more.
