Rayo Vallecano is good for his country
The Spanish league secured a fifth additional Champions League qualification spot after Rayo Vallecano qualified for the European Conference League final.
Madrid made history by reaching their first ever European final with a 2-0 aggregate win over Strasbourg, a victory that guaranteed Spain’s lead over Germany in the European Union standings, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Although Freiburg beat Sporting Braga 3-0 to book their place in the Europa League final, Rayo’s win was enough to secure an extra La Liga spot.
Marca explained that Spain have increased their score to 22,093 points compared to Germany’s 21,642 points, officially securing the presence of 5 clubs in the next edition of the Champions League.
Harry Kane’s equalizer in Bayern Munich’s Bayern Munich-Paris Saint-Germain game restored hope for the Germans and reduced the gap to just 0.424 points, but the decision was postponed to Thursday’s games as Rayo’s victory in regulation time was enough to end the conflict in Spanish football’s favour.
The wait continued until the second leg of the semi-final with Celta Vigo and Real Betis exiting from the European quarter-finals, with one of them able to take the place early if they continued the continental route.
Real Betis are currently in 5th place, having qualified for the Champions League, while Celta Vigo have qualified for the Europa League, with Real Sociedad qualifying as Copa del Rey champions and Getafe holding a place in the European Conference League.
But the conflict still rages with several clubs competing for European places in the last four rounds, notably Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Osasuna and even Rayo Vallecano themselves.
Osasuna and Rayo need to win all of their remaining matches, while Betis are almost completely reeling, in addition to other tricky results, to clinch a Champions League spot.
