Israel has banned the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque for one week.

The Jerusalem government said in a Facebook post that Sheikh Muhammad Hussein was arrested by Israeli forces after delivering his Friday sermon at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Later, the governor confirmed that Hussein was released, but he was temporarily banned by the Israeli authorities from entering the holiest site of Islam in East Jerusalem for a week, with the possibility of the ban.

According to the Quds News Network, Hussein was arrested for the content of his sermon, in which he prayed for mercy for Palestinians killed by Israel and relief for those held in Israeli prisons.

In a message to Al Jazeera, the Governor of Jerusalem said “the arrest was made to serve him (Hussein) with an order to prevent him from entering the Al-Aqsa mosque for one week, with the possibility of reparations.”

Israel has not commented on Hussein’s summary arrest or detention.

The event is the latest in a growing trend Israeli standards in the Palestinian territory since the beginning of the massacre in Gaza in October 2023.

More than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank since then, including at least 243 children, in what rights groups say is fueling military attacks, settler violence and expanding Israeli rule.

On Friday, six Palestinians, including children, were injured during an attack on residents of Huwara, Nablus.

Local sources said the settlers encountered a Palestinian family, including an elderly man, using pepper spray and beating them.

The attack took place on the family’s property. Israeli soldiers were reportedly present and protected the refugees during the attack.

Israeli forces reportedly beat residents and arrested three members of the family, including 80-year-old Ibrahim Ismail al-Jabour.

The incident comes amid growing concern around the world over the ongoing violence in the West Bank. Last month, Amnesty International released a report accusing the Israeli government of carrying out a campaign of ethnic cleansing in the region. The report said that the campaign was run by the government and not because of corrupt people or right-wing ministers.
