According to local press reports, Judge Adriana Tese sentenced her to 5 years in prison for criminal mischief and 3 years for perverting the course of justice, with one year to be served consecutively.
Prosecutors argued that Rose fabricated the charges with the intention of extorting £100,000 ($134,000) from the anonymous individual. Rose denied the allegations throughout the trial and consistently maintained that she was raped.
Court documents show Rose traveled to Hong Kong on January 31, 2024 after meeting the man while in Thailand a month earlier.
WhatsApp messages exchanged in the hours and days after the alleged rape at the apartment on February 1 are at the center of the prosecution’s case.
In one text she sent the next morning, she asked, “I don’t want to have sex, are you mad?” The man replied: “No, I was surprised at your restraint.”
Later that day, Rose wrote: “You violated me last night, I didn’t want to have sex.”
He replied, “I’m so sorry, I was a bit drunk and misread your signs, it’s no excuse and I know it won’t make it any better.”
“You basically dared me,” Rose wrote in a later exchange. The man replied, “That is not what I like and I am sick.”
The pair later exchanged messages about money. According to the written judgment published in March, the man agreed to reimburse Rose for her travel and accommodation.
In one message, Rose wrote: “Send me the exact amount you have for everything. So think about it, think about it carefully.”
He transferred £5,000 that day and tried to send another £5,000.
Rose went on to write: “You gave me 10% of what I owed. 100% of my soul is gone.”
“But I don’t have 100k, I have no way to pay that,” the man wrote in a later message.
Rose reported the rape to police on February 3. The man was detained and questioned before being released without charge. Rose was arrested the next day and later charged with contempt and perverting the course of public justice.
