It has now been a year and a half since the regime of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in Syria.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has visited countries in the region and the US, as his transitional government tries to pull Syria out of political and economic isolation.

Washington has lifted sanctions and plans to remove Damascus from the list of state sponsors of “terrorists”, a designation that dates back to 1979.

But security challenges continue – the most recent being the attack on the capital this month.

There is also pressure from Israel, which has seized additional territory in southwestern Syria since the ouster of the Assad regime.
