Beijing’s new ethnic unity law has come into force. It reinforces Mandarin’s position as the primary language of education, business and government in China.

The government says that the principles of the law on unity and prevention of separation benefit everyone.

But international rights activists say this will also undermine the rights of groups such as the Uighurs and Tibetans. They are also warning about a decision that says China can take action against those who violate the law outside the country.

Taiwan has also objected to this. His government warns that the law could be used against people there who oppose Beijing.
