Ireland assistant coach Gary Wilson said their two T20 matches against India at Stormont were a great way to “get everyone excited about a Ward Cup” to be co-hosted by England, Scotland and Ireland in 2030.
The Belfast venue is lined up to host matches during the tournament and local supporters will get a taste of what’s to come when the reigning world champions arrive for matches on Friday and Sunday (both 13:30 BST).
Ireland have one win from their four matches in this year’s edition held in India and Sri Lanka, with the game against Zimbabwe being abandoned.
Because of their ICC ranking, Ireland have secured a place in the 2028 tournament and after this weekend’s Twenty20 internationals they will immediately turn their attention to next year’s ODI World Cup qualifiers.
“Our next T20 match will probably be in 2027,” Wilson told BBC Sport NI.
“After that we’ll have an ODI (50-over format) focus and naturally with the World Cup qualifiers coming up in the new year, so for a little while, T20 cricket will take a back seat.
“It’s a new cycle and the good thing is we know we’ve qualified not only for 2028 but also for 2030 and that allows for real planning.
“Our aspiration should be 2030 and a home World Cup where we want to involve everyone and we will make a game like that. Why can’t we play Kenya from 2003 and go to the semi-finals or go as far as possible? That should be everyone’s goal.”
