Iran has reasserted its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that foreign commercial and military vessels will be inspected, if they do not comply with the rules for passing through the waterway.
Saturday’s announcement came after the United States signaled that President Donald Trump was close to a decision on a possible deal with Iran, but Tehran rejected the deal.

“The control of the Strait of Hormuz is used by the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iran’s military headquarters, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said in a statement reported by Iranian media on Saturday.
“All ships, commercial ships, and tanks only need to pass through designated routes and obtain permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy. Violation of these rules will seriously compromise the safety of their vehicles,” he added.
Iran also issued a warning to foreign forces operating in the region, saying that any attempt to interfere with navigation or shipping would trigger a response.
On Friday, Trump met with advisers in the White House Situation Room and said a “final determination” A possible deal with Iran was made recently. But no word followed the meeting.
US sources told the AFP news agency that the deal was awaiting Trump’s signature, but did not make a decision after Friday’s meeting.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said on Friday that despite messages continuing to be exchanged “no final agreement has been reached” on the deal with the US.

Efforts to reach a deal were called into question this week by US strikes on the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, followed by Iranian retaliatory fire.
Iran’s IRNA news agency said the air force shot down a “US-Zionist enemy drone” on Saturday, citing a military statement.
Mr Trump said his economic commitments would include Iran agreeing not to develop nuclear weapons, and reopening the closed Strait of Hormuz.
“President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and fulfill his red lines,” a White House official told AFP, adding: “Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.”
Trump ‘betraying diplomacy’
Also on Saturday, Mohsen Rezaei, adviser to the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, said in a statement on social media that Trump is “giving negotiations a third time” by continuing the closure of the US military in the crisis, making what he called “a lot of demands”.
In a social media post on Friday, Trump said Tehran would remove mines from the river and end the blockade of the waterway without “compensation”, while the US would lift its blockade.
Both countries will coordinate the removal and destruction of Iran’s enriched uranium, he said, adding that “no money will be exchanged, until further notice”.
Iran’s Fars news agency, however, said that Tehran wants the “immediate release of $12bn” in frozen goods before moving to the next stage of negotiations.
On the free reopening of Hormuz, sources said that “there is no such word found in the text of the agreement”, while Trump’s comment on the destruction of Iran’s nuclear weapons is “absurd”.
Iran’s ISNA news agency quoted parliamentarian Alireza Salimi as saying that the plan “to exercise Iran’s control and sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz will soon be approved by parliament”.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency said the US blockade was still in place, and that its ships were “receiving warnings from CENTCOM to stop and not cross the blockade line”.
