Argentina defender Christian Romero says Gary Neville was “stupid” for criticizing his centre-back partnership with Lisandro Martinez.
In the construction of Argentina Amazing 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory In England, former Manchester United full-back Neville described Romero and Martinez as “the best centre-half pairing in the world”.
Both were yellow-carded in Wednesday’s last-four clash in Atlanta, but were limited to just two shots on goal in England, where defending champions Argentina scored late goals to win from behind.
Romero, 28, and Martinez have started all but one of Argentina’s World Cup games this summer, helping Lionel Scaloni’s side reach their second straight World Cup final.
Asked about Neville’s punditry comments, Tottenham defender Romero said: “The only thing I hope is when I retire I’m not that stupid. Hopefully I don’t criticize a player or anybody.”
Because at the end of the day, we are doing everything we can for our national team, sometimes it is right for us, sometimes it is bad, but we are happy to be in the World Cup final again.
“I think we’re making history, it’s a big thing for us, and we feel the importance of this shirt as much as anyone.”
“We’re used to people talking about us all the time, they seem to like doing it, and we respond on the pitch, that’s it, always with respect,” Manchester United defender Martinez commented.
