The Pharaohs postponed the World Cup at the ultimate cost
Egypt midfielder Hamdi Fathi has confirmed that the Pharaohs team is currently the best in the Arab world and Africa, despite strong rivals such as Senegal and Morocco.
Hamdi Fathi was part of the Egyptian national team’s 2026 World Cup trip to America, Canada and Mexico, which ended in the round of 16 after losing 2-3 to Argentina.
In statements given to the Egyptian “On Sport” TV channel, Fathi said: “We weren’t worried about facing Senegal in the World Cup. It wasn’t so much about us as it was about our goal of promotion.”
“Hossam Hassan (coach of Egypt national team) made us face any team without fear and we did not think about avoiding the confrontation with Senegal because we were the best Arab and African teams and if we met them we would beat them.
Regarding the comparison with the Moroccan national team, Fathi said: “The Moroccan team is making steady progress towards building a respectable generation and finished fourth at the last World Cup and reached the quarter-finals in that match, which is a great success.”
He concluded. “But at the moment we can win against Morocco. They fear us because we can always win against them.”
Notably, the Moroccan team achieved the biggest Arab and African achievement at the 2026 World Cup after reaching the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to France.
