The French coach has taken over as coach of the Carthage Eagles, succeeding Sabri Lamouchi

Former Saudi Arabia soccer star Hussein Abdel-Ghani has criticized the decision to appoint French coach Herve Renard as Tunisia coach for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup, replacing sacked coach Sabri Lamouchi.

Today, Tuesday, the Tunisian Football Federation announced the appointment of Renard as technical director of the Eagles of Carthage until the end of the team’s 2026 World Cup campaign, replacing Sabri Lamouchi, who was sacked following the 1-5 defeat by Sweden.

Hossein Abdel-Ghani felt that Renard was not an ideal choice for the Tunisian national team as he stressed the need to use one of the local coaches in light of the limited time before the final two World Cup group stage matches.

Abdul Ghani said in statements “Our Club” program on MBC 1“I don’t know how much Mr. Renard knows about Tunisian football, but I would prefer the coach to be a nationalist, especially since he is coming in the middle of the tournament.”

“If we talk logically, then the reliance on the psychological aspect will be more technically, because in a day or two it won’t change anything, but the shock can have a positive effect on the players.”

For his part, Saudi Arabian football legend Sami Al-Jaber mocked Renard’s coaching of Tunisia at the World Cup, commenting:

Al-Jaber notes that Renard was close to leading Saudi Arabia at the 2026 World Cup, but he was sacked two months before the start of the World Cup and replaced by Greece’s Giorgos Donis.
