Following the confirmation of Michael Carrick’s appointment as Manchester United manager, the Red Devils’ preparations have begun for the 2026-2027 season, which will see the club compete in four competitions: the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
Rumors have been rife that Manchester United are looking to increase the quality and depth of their squad next season due to an increased number of fixtures.
The club are said to be keen on signing two midfielders, a left winger and a left back, with the option of a striker and centre-back.
But Carrick and the Manchester United management are not only focusing on transfers, the English manager is also trying to change the current style of play of the team, which may require changing the roles of some of the stars of the team. Read also:
Despite winning 12 of his 17 games in charge since replacing Ruben Amorim, Carrick wants his team to dominate the ball in the same way that PSG midfielders Ruiz, Neves and Vitignan were instrumental in the French club’s recent Champions League success.
Luis Enrique’s side currently play in a 4-3-3 formation, while Carrick favors a predominantly 4-2-3-1 system, with captain Bruno Fernandes given the freedom to move forward and support the striker.
According to The Sun newspaper, Carrick wants to change Coby Maino’s role and encourage the England international to move more behind opposition defenses while retaining his defensive duties in the hope of making him a more complete midfielder.

Although the transfer window does not open until June 15, Brazil midfielder Ederson has agreed to join the club on a four-year deal after Manchester United and Atalanta agreed a £35m transfer fee.
With the defensive-minded Ederson likely to carry most of the defensive load in midfield, he could provide the ideal support for Maino to develop the attacking side.
According to the same source, United appear keen to sign another midfielder and could add a second player if Manuel Ugarte leaves this summer.
Mason Mount is also expected to remain at Old Trafford despite making just two appearances under Amorim, against Sunderland and Brighton, although he could also be asked to play in a deeper role. Forward Joshua Tsirkzi and goalkeeper Andre Onana are also expected to leave.
After Maino signed a new five-year deal at United in April, Carrick insisted the young midfielder “embodies” United’s philosophy of developing players through the academy.
“I’ve been very impressed with Kobe since I’ve been here,” he said. “I think I’ve known him for a long time in different positions, but I’ve definitely known him for a long time, he embodies the spirit of this club.”

“You know? The young players coming out of the academy who live and breathe the club have real talent. He has shown what he can do and his performances in the last two matches in particular have been fantastic. The natural step is to sign a new contract and everyone is very happy about that, including me because I think he deserves it.”
