Vinčić will become the first Slovenian referee to officiate a World Cup final and the 23rd referee to officiate a final match in the tournament’s history.
Vincic, born 25 November 1979, is one of the most popular and respected European referees in the European Football Association (UEFA).
This will be the fourth match he will officiate at the current World Cup, after taking charge of Brazil and Morocco, Algeria and Jordan and Mexico and Ecuador.
The Slovenian referee was the subject of a controversial incident last season after red-carding Real Madrid’s Edouard Kamavinga in the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich last April.
Vincic gave Kamavinga a second yellow card to disrupt the game, which many saw as a harsh decision at a sensitive moment, as things turned against Real Madrid after this decision and the Royals bowed out of the tournament.
Alvaro Arbeloa, the coach of Real Madrid at the time, attacked the Slovenian referee, saying that the decision “ruined the match”.
