Away from the basketball courts and the pressures of preparing for the new season, French star Victor Wimbanyama made the most of his summer break by showing his passion for football in a remarkable appearance that caught the attention of fans on social media.
Wimbanyama appeared in a friendly football match in the US city of Houston wearing a Paris Saint-Germain shirt, in a sight that drew widespread attention after videos of his skills went viral on social media.
The 2.24-meter-tall San Antonio Spurs player took part in the game held at the Katy Sports Complex, where he surprised the audience with his artistic touches, despite being one of the most famous stars of the American professional basketball league.
According to what was published in the newspaper Le Parisien Vembanyama scored two goals during the match, including a powerful shot with his right foot. He celebrated it by crossing his arms over his chest in the style of French star Kylian Mbappe. He also displayed remarkable individual skills, including a “roulette” dribbling.
The player left the field to the applause of the audience, who rushed to take photos and videos, while some of them took souvenir photos with him.
The appearance comes days after Wimbanyama signed a five-year contract extension with San Antonio Spurs in a deal worth around €220 million.
Despite his attendance at the football game, his reason for being in Houston is to continue his private basketball training, as he trains with American League legend Hakeem Olayjuwon, a two-time league champion, for the second year in a row.
Wimbanyama is known for his passion for football, having previously attended the 2026 World Cup final, which was won by Spain. He also took part in the friendly match held in Tokyo last summer, during which he scored a goal from a direct free kick.
The captain of the France basketball team is expected to return to the Roosters at the end of next August, when they will play two friendlies against Serbia before resuming the 2027 World Cup qualifiers.
