The state is rewriting its federal ranching regulations to increase the number of cattle, sheep, and other livestock grazing on 155 million acres in the West, an area twice the size of New Mexico.
Public grazing lands are controlled by a century-old system that subsidizes the wealthiest Americans while doing little to address environmental pollution. ProPublica and High Country News are available last year.
While rangeland management experts say overgrazing has decimated public lands, new regulations from the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management—first reformed in 1995—only exacerbate the trend.
