Relatives of David Brouillette, the deputy who shot and killed a man in Maine, said he had a history of violent behavior.

Reports have emerged that David Brouillette, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. shot and killed Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero of the United States, was hired despite his troubled history of violence.

On Thursday, The Associated Press and CBS News published reports from Brouillette’s family that he had struggled with mental illness since childhood. They questioned his eligibility to work as an ICE agent.

“I don’t understand how he continues to get these jobs where there are guns. He’s a danger to people. He’s a danger to people and to himself,” ex-wife Ashley Brouillette told CBS News. And I don’t understand how they keep failing.

The reports have drawn renewed attention to the hiring practices of federal immigration agencies, which have been criticized for abandoning their standards to expand their roles.

President Donald Trump has pledged to carry out the largest deportation campaign in US history, and agencies like ICE have gone on a hiring spree to meet the White House’s demands.

In January, ICE announced that it had increased its workforce by 120 percent, adding 12,000 new hires.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, pointed to the numbers as evidence that the Trump administration prioritizes expanding social security.

“The Trump administration kicked 12,000 supporters off our streets without making sure they were eligible to carry a badge and carry a gun,” Schumer said.

“Republicans have given this tyrannical agency too much power and no accountability.”

Brouillette is accused of fatally shooting 25-year-old Duran Guerrero near his home in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday. This happened a few days after the shooting Lorenzo Salgado Araujo with an ICE agent in Houston, Texas, on July 7.

At least 10 people have been killed in incidents involving ICE agents since Trump began cracking down on immigration officials, who have been criticized for brutal procedures and human rights abuses.

Brouillette’s ex-wife divorced him in 2009 after he abused her after she became pregnant with their daughter.

In another incident recounted by Ashley and confirmed by her mother, Brouillette threw hot water on her while she was holding their child.

Democrats have been quick to point to reports of Brouillette’s conduct as evidence that greater oversight is needed at ICE and its sister agencies.

“This explosion is extremely dangerous — exactly the kind of intolerable danger that we fear from arrests and inadequate training,” Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said in a statement to The Associated Press following the report.

“This agent should not have had a gun – let alone one that was given to him by the United States government. And now someone is dead. I will continue to demand answers and accountability,” he added.
