Neuer refuses to take responsibility for Germany’s defeat to Ecuador
Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has refused to take responsibility for the Machines’ 2-1 defeat by Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup final after he came under heavy criticism for his second goal in the game.
Criticism came Because of Gonzalo Plata’s goal from very close rangeTaking advantage of Neuer’s poor position, Neuer responded in his own defense, saying, according to the newspaper:Brand:Spanish. “No, I don’t take the blame at all. “What happened was a very normal bounce of the ball after the header and I was just trying to catch it in a natural situation that would happen again in any game.”
“Any goalkeeper who has played football in their life knows that I have to position myself like that to wait for the ball and try to catch it like I did. Of course, the shot looks bad and unlucky because I was standing in the same place, but it was not a mistake on my part.”
“Well, how was I supposed to stand there? Should I kneel on the ground even though the ball was coming straight at me? I had to move towards the ball to catch it, and if the opponent managed to get a foot and change the way to pass me, it happened, but in this position it was impossible to freeze my movement;
German technical director Julian Nagelsmann took the same approach. He was quick to exonerate Neuer for the mistake, saying: “The opponent kicked the ball from behind and in such situations it is very difficult for any goalkeeper to make a save. It’s very disappointing for Manu (Neuyer).” He has yet to have his defining moment in this tournament“.
Notably, Germany qualified for the round of 32 by topping their group with six points ahead of Cote d’Ivoire, who finished second on the same points thanks to Mackenzie’s 2-1 head-to-head advantage over the Elephants, while the Germans face Paraguay in the next round.
