New mission of the World Cup.
Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro has unleashed his fury on the media following criticism of his players following their heartbreaking World Cup defeat to the United States, calling on the media to stop attacking his team and focus all the “punches” on him.
Alvaro takes full responsibility Paraguay’s 4-1 loss to the USAOne of the host nations last week, stressing the need to rest their players so that they can correct their course in Group Four against Turkey on Friday.
Waving his finger several times during the press conference reported by the agency, Alvaro said:Reuters:“Criticize me. You can shoot me but not them.. Protect them. Do you know why? Because when the World Cup is over, I will leave, but they will stay. They will still represent the country.”
He added: “Please hit me, hit me, I will raise my chin and take all your shots, but all I ask of you is to protect the players because they are the most valuable thing that the national football has.”
Paraguay last competed at the World Cup in 2010, when they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Spain, who went on to win the title, in a dramatic match that represented their best achievement at the tournament.
There will be no room for error against both Paraguay and Turkey in San Francisco Bay on Friday, after both suffered losses in their opening matches when Turkey lost 2-0 to Australia.
Alvaro admitted that Paraguay was “burdened on all fronts” by the United States, but emphasized that the team has rearranged its ranks and will present a strong match against Turkey.
However, he seemed visibly upset by questions about his selection in the opening game, launching into another lengthy tirade.
He continued. “I closed the file on the United States game on Saturday and you’re taking me back to this chapter… Tomorrow we have the final against Turkey.”
Gustavo Alfaro blamed his statements, saying: “They’re here representing seven million people … so I’d like to see you defend this shirt. You can destroy the coach, that’s fine.”
