Spain’s Luis Enrique celebrated a new achievement in his managerial career after he led Paris Saint-Germain to retain the Champions League title for the second season in a row by beating Arsenal in Saturday night’s final.
After the match, Enrique spoke about many issues, especially the penalty shootout that made his team smile in the final showdown, stressing that a penalty does not diminish the value of either team.
The Spanish coach said in the statement of the Spanish newspaper Marca. “I lost on penalties against Spain against Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar and they punished me badly for it,” referring to the criticism he faced from the media and the public.
“It depends on the quality of the players and the goalkeepers, and penalties do not change the assessment of the game of Arsenal or my team.
Enrique spoke about the difficulty of the game against Mikel Arteta’s team, noting that his team suffered a lot after conceding the first goal, but managed to gradually come back during the events of the match.
“Arsenal are a very competitive team and have lost a few matches this season. They started the match well and scored early and we had to work hard to come back. We looked better in the second half and I think we deserved to win, although Arsenal played a great game too.
The Spanish coach also praised the performance of his players throughout the season, stressing that the continuous desire to develop is one of the most important reasons for the European team’s success.
“These players are different. Sometimes I ask them to stop training, but they keep working. When a player enjoys what he’s doing, everything becomes easier, and that’s why I’m sure the team will continue to compete strongly next season.”
“On his second consecutive crown with Paris Saint-Germain, Enrique said: “The first was historic, but the second will be even more historic. The club needed to cement its place among Europe’s greats and now he is part of this group and we don’t want to back down from that.”
