World champion Lando Norris took victory from pole position in Hungary on Sunday to secure his and McLaren’s first grand prix win of 2026.
Norris was passed by teammate Oscar Piastri for the lead at the start but the Australian later retired from the race with gearbox failure.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed the final podium with second and title leader Kimi Antonelli third.
Lewis Hamilton, who was given a three-place grid penalty before the race for preventing Piastre from qualifying, dropped from fourth to fifth at the checkered flag, after being handed a five-second speed penalty in the pit lane.
Here are my ratings for how the drivers performed throughout the weekend in Hungary.
Lando Norris – 9.5/10
The whole weekend has been waiting for McLaren and Norris. Pole position, outstanding pace when finally released into clear air and a controlled run to the flag gave him his first grand prix win of the season, even if losing the lap lead was a minor blemish.
Max Verstappen – 8.5/10
Pulled a struggling Red Bull to a result that looked unlikely after qualifying. He continued to struggle with problems with his car throughout the weekend but put himself in the right position to be second in line after Piastri retired.
Kimi Antonelli – 8/10
A strong damage-limitation drive from championship leader Mercedes. His failure to slow enough for a yellow flag in qualifying compromised his starting position, but it was an impressive response to recover from seventh to the podium and hold off the Ferraris.
Charles Leclerc – 6.5/10
Ferrari looked extremely quick on Friday but Leclerc was unable to turn that promise into a podium. Oscar Piastre lost positions to teammate Lewis Hamilton at the start and finished fifth on the road before Hamilton’s penalty promoted him.
Lewis Hamilton – 6.5/10
Fastest Ferrari driver of the weekend, but two costly penalties detract from much good work. He missed pole by just 0.012 seconds and raced strongly, yet qualifying in the pit lane and hampering Piastre’s pace turned a potential podium finish into fifth place.
Issac Hazor – 7.5/10
A quiet weekend from Hadjar. Qualified and finished comfortably in the points and finished sixth on a day when his more experienced team-mate showed just how difficult it was to drive Red Bull.
George Russell – 7.5/10
A great recovery after the anti-stall dropped him from sixth to 21st at the start. Qualifying was disrupted by a water leak and his race was destroyed within seconds, but the Mercedes driver fought his way back to seventh to salvage valuable points.
Liam Lawson – 7.5/10
Admittedly he underperformed in qualifying but made up for it with a very good race. He used his new tires to pass teammate Arvid Lindblad late and move the Racing Bulls into eighth.
Nico Hulkenberg – 8/10
Reaching Q3 with a deserved point finish and putting himself at the front of the midfield battle. Lindblad made a late pass and comfortably overtook Audi team-mate Gabriel Bortoletto for the weekend.
Arvid Lindblad – 7.5/10
Another strong rookie weekend. Reached Q3 despite missing most of final practice and an ambitious one-stop strategy worked well enough to claim the final points, though Lawson got the better of him.
