The last two circuits, Silverstone and Spa, proved particularly difficult for them due to the underperformance of their Honda engine.
But even at last month’s Spanish Grand Prix, on a corner-based track, they were four seconds off pole position and more than three seconds off the Racing Bulls and Audi teams at the front of the midfield.
That’s partly why Alonso is resisting the temptation to make any judgments about where the term might end up this weekend.
“I’m not thinking about numbers or position,” he said. “We’ve had very different gaps in midfield in the last five competitions.
“Other teams have chosen a more conventional way of improving, bringing 0.1-0.2 seconds in each race and then reaching one second in 12 races.
“We don’t do that and we try to catch it all at once. In the end it doesn’t change your natural position.”
Honda’s engine will not change this weekend – the Japanese company is taking its development engine to the next race, the Dutch Grand Prix, after Formula 1’s four-week summer break.
Aston Martin chief technical officer Adrian Nye said at the British Grand Prix earlier this month: “It became clear very quickly that we weren’t going to be competitive in the early races.
“So we’ve taken pains but I believe it’s the right decision not to make any progress in the first half of the year, which means, really, when everyone is developing, of course, the gap at the front is going to be really big.
But it was time for the ’26 car to be very competitive, as we got ourselves better organized, putting a lot of different systems in place for the future and doing our research properly.
“So, it allowed us to step back a little bit, put a little bit more pressure on ourselves, because I think we put ourselves under a lot of pressure during the winter, and take a deep breath, and we really understand our problems, what we have to achieve, (with this reform package) we go to Hungary as the first stage, the second stage is in Zandvoort.
