St Helens moved to the top of the Super League after beating Huddersfield giants 18-16 on Thursday.
Paul Rowley’s side made it five league wins in a row with a 32-0 thrashing of rivals Wigan Warriors in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup and will keep an eye on second-placed Leeds Rhinos, who can return to the top if they beat Wigan Warriors on Friday. Sky Sports.
Four first-half tries from Harry Robertson, Lewis Murphy, Wayne Dagnall and George Delaney put St Helens 24-0 up at half-time at Huddersfield but the home side stormed back in the second half.
Tries from Asher O’Donnell, Adam Swift and Neil Ewalds gave St Helens a small scare but Huddersfield had too much to do and lost their ninth game of the Super League season to remain bottom of the table.
“We allowed for chaos with some things that we put out but the stop-start nature (of the match), then you lose concentration, it becomes unusual to watch and play,” Rowley said. Sky Sports.
“So it was an ugly second half but credit to Huddersfield to fight back and show some heart to get back into it and upset us at the end.”
It was interim Huddersfield coach Liam Finn’s last match in charge before Australian Jim Lenihan arrives in the UK next week.
The Finn took over from Luke Robinson in March after Huddersfield lost their first five league games and won his first two matches as interim coach. But, Huddersfield have now lost four consecutive league matches and face a relegation battle this season.
Jack Welsby’s first break helped Harry Robertson touch down for Saints, with Lewis Murphy then punishing poor handling by Huddersfield to head over for a corner.
Winger Dagnall added Saints’ third try on 18 minutes just before half-time after George Delaney capitalized on another Huddersfield mistake.
Huddersfield rallied after the restart, O’Donnell picking up a loose ball from Tui Lolohea’s kick. More tries from Swift, against his former club, and Giants full-back Evalds, with six minutes remaining, looked set to set up a thrilling finish.
However, Jackson Hastings crucially conceded a penalty in the 65th minute, which proved enough to see Saints home.
