He was a member of the five-member council that led Hamas for nearly two years.

Now, Khalil al-Hayya has been chosen to lead the Palestinian movement, which he joined when it was founded four decades ago.

He has survived several Israeli assassination attempts and has been arrested many times.

Recently, he led the Palestinian delegation in negotiations to end Israel’s war in Gaza.

Al-Hayya comes to power as Hamas faces increasing pressure to relinquish power – and aMore than 2 million Palestinians continue to suffer almost daily in Israel, despite the ceasefire.

So, how will the new leader of Hamas manage the reality on the ground?
