This is useful if you, like me, like to change your Bluetooth trackers between the things you’re using. I have been losing my luggage since I was four years old, being sent on international flights. Here are a few ways I’ve learned to manage my belongings (and how to deal with disappointment when I inevitably don’t).
Place your tracker in the inner pocket. You don’t want to just put it loosely in your stuff. Either it will get in the middle of your clothes, where the Bluetooth signal will be blocked, or you or a careless TSA employee will accidentally shove it down. Some of my favorite suitcases to carry, like Peak Design Roller Pro ($600)have AirTag pockets built into the pocket, so you don’t have to worry about them falling out.
Write your own trackers. It’s easy to change the name and emoji of your followers in Find My or Find Hub, and you should! It’s hard to keep track of what you’ve lost when you have six AirTags, all labeled “Property of Adrienne.”
Check the battery before you leave. If you don’t travel often, it’s easy to let your Bluetooth device sit unused for months.
What about GPS trackers? GPS trackers use satellites, while AirTags and other similar trackers use Bluetooth and a network of similar devices they can communicate with, such as phones. Although you may encounter small gaps in the coverage of Bluetooth trackers when you find your luggage – for example, your suitcase was loaded on a cart and is not more than 30 meters from the iPhone when it goes to claim – you are guaranteed to have many devices on the network of Find My or Find Hub at the airport to help you set up. GPS trackers usually require registration, so I don’t recommend them for tracking assets if you use them a few times a year.
