How to stay safe in the water this summer, while still having fun


Many bodies of water in the UK remain below 15C (59F) all year round, meaning they are “dangerously cold”, says Hickman.

Jumping into cold water too quickly can cause cold water shock, which limits your ability to move and impairs your breathing. There is a risk of drowning if you breathe water.

If you jump into the water, you may experience cold water shock. Instead, you should ease in and let your body adjust.

Oakley-Jenner says the mantra is “ankles, hips and breasts,” reminding him to gradually lower each part of his body into the water until he gets used to the temperature.

If you see symptoms of cold water shock, you should try to adjust your breathing Floating on your back.

Pennycard advises people to practice floating in swimming pools. In an emergency, be sure to keep your head back, ears under water, and steady breathing before making any decisions.
