How Qatar became FIFA’s Technology Test Lab

To ordinary football To the spectators, the game may seem like always – the same green, 22 players, the referee, and the usual rhythm that lasts for 90 minutes.

The changes are only visible if you look down on what you are used to. What seemed like traditional simulations are now supported by tracking systems, automated analysis, and real-time data that flows silently in the background.

Most of the technologies are now supporting it 2026 FIFA World Cup-from the connected sports balls to the digital reconstruction of the time when the conflicts were tested for the first time on the Qatari stadiums, all in order to quickly answer the oldest football questions: Did the ball cross the line? Did it leave the playground? Was the player offside?

“Innovation was key to Qatar’s bid for the FIFA World Cup and the subsequent preparations,” said Thani Al Zarraa, head of Qatar’s High Committee for Contribution and Legacy, which was established in 2011 to oversee the development of the infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup. “Since the start of the FIFA Arab Cup 2021, we have done more than big football games; we have helped to improve the way the game is played, guide and inform.”

The pattern is hard to ignore. Starting in 2021, when several systems were tested together for the first time at the FIFA Arab Cup, the amount of FIFA technology passed Qatar for the first time. As the country continues to participate in major football events, it has become a place where innovations can be tested under real-world conditions before reaching the international level.

Optical Player Tracking

Among the technologies tested in Qatar was player monitoring: high-precision stadium cameras that record the movements of each player several times per second, down to centimeter accuracy. Cameras, mostly invisible to the fans, will soon be the basis of technology that will influence the biggest football decisions on the world’s biggest stage.

One of the oldest debates in football is one of the simplest: When was the pass played?

To answer this question, FIFA introduced a connected football that has a sensor suspended in its center. Adidas tested the soccer contact technology at the FIFA Arab Cup before releasing it Al Rihla at the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

Fans saw the results immediately. When Ecuador’s opening goal against Qatar was missed in the first game of the tournament, the decision depended on a system that could detect when the ball would be played. Combined with AI-powered player tracking, connected football helped transform offside calls from time-consuming investigations into decisions measured in milliseconds.

FIFA Player Program

The same year also saw the first release of a new digital platform for gamers. The FIFA Player App gave athletes the ability to know what they were doing – heat maps, body profiles, smart actions – often in a matter of minutes.

Built in collaboration with FIFPRO, the world’s representative association of football professionals, it made an unexpected change: Performance evaluation was no longer reserved for trainers. It was becoming part of the players’ experience.

VAR and Goal-Line Technology

By the time the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off, most of these systems had passed the trial phase. Semiautomated offside technology was one of the new developments at the tournament, speeding up decisions that used to take minutes to call instantly. The connected ball, carrying its central sensor in its center, helped to confirm the touch and improve the accuracy of every moment that needs to be consumed in the VAR (Video assistant referee) comments.

Dedicated workstations and replay tablets provided coaches with live video and game-by-game information. Instead of waiting until halftime or the final whistle, coaches can identify patterns and make adjustments while the game is still underway.
