How much does a Steam Machine cost to make?

The Steam Machine is here, with a starting price of $1,049. Yes, it’s almost twice the price of the PS5, but what you’re buying here isn’t a console but a full-fledged PC – and a small one at that. Valve is said to be selling the Steam Machine especially for the price. So we asked ourselves: How much would it cost to build something like a Steam Machine yourself?

You can’t really build the same thing. The silent 6-inch cube valve that was designed is no longer manufactured off the shelf. Although we tried to compare the experience of the Steam Machine as closely as possible, we ended up with a PC that was much more expensive – admittedly, we still have retail prices, and Valve is not – and more than two and a half times the size.

All that adds up to $1,268.81 (or $1,446.81 if you go with 2TB of storage instead of 512GB), including discounts or special offers. These components are obviously not the same as the Steam Machine, as the device uses standard processors, but the CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage are as close as we can get to off-the-shelf hardware, and should have similar performance.

It starts at $1,269 with an AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 CPU, integrated Radeon 8050S graphics, and 32GB of shared memory. The Framework Desktop is still slightly larger than the Steam Machine, measuring 3.81 x 8.09 x 8.9 inches, but it’s much smaller than anything you can build with an exposed GPU.

All in all, it’s no surprise to beat the combination of price, performance, and size of the Steam Machine.
