SpaceX has launched more about its future value on orbital data centers. Not rockets. Not for space.
Instead, it plans to launch and maintain a 1 million star cluster capable of generating 120 GW to power tens of millions of computers – and more than 100 million GPUs at the edge of data processing applications.
The company’s founder, Elon Musk, revealed the plans for these giant satellites months ago, but until recently, the size of the satellites was not known. That changed in June, when Musk and Ian Dahl, director of satellite engineering for SpaceX, spoke promotional video about the company’s plans to build the first iteration of the data center, called the AI1 satellite. The video eventually gave the company numbers about the satellite’s size and power.
