How Brendon McCullum lost his role as England Cricket Test Head Coach

For a while England was more than a cricket team. They were a feeling, a movement and an event. McCullum’s next three years at the helm were mixed at times, but nothing like the first year.

McCallum gave us a clue on his first day on the job as to why the ride was off the rails.

“I don’t technically coach,” McCullum said at Lord’s in May 2022. “I understand the tactics, but for me it’s about man-management and trying to give the team the right environment to go out and be the best version of themselves.”

The New Zealanders set them free, giving them the freedom they know how to use.

When it came time to build a new England team – as per the age profile, it was always on McCullum’s watch – his style was not suited to molding the new generation.

Jamie Smith, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir – even Jack Crawley and Olly Pope. Their Test career under McCullum got off to a strong start. When they needed more, he couldn’t provide it.
