Homebridge 2.0 is here, and it speaks Matter

“There are two types of use we’re looking at:

Use 1 – Filling gaps in HomeKit device support: Apple has started using Matter for new device models instead of adding to HomeKit directly. Vacuum is a recent example – Apple added vacuum support to the Home app, but through Matter, not HomeKit. Our goal is to bridge the gap so that Homebridge plugins can provide functionality for these models. We think this is very possible and an immediate goal.

Use case 2 – Using other Matter controllers with Homebridge plugins: This can allow your Homebridge plugins to be accessible from other Matter controllers, like the Aqara app for example. This is a long-term problem – it will require all kinds of changes to support it, so expect this to happen gradually over time.
